DensiFlora, Immersive Pavilion

installation | a collaboration between the Emergent Technologies and Design (EmTech) programme at the Architectural Association (AA) and Populous in London, DensiFlora combines a full-scale bending-active rattan pavilion with an extended reality (XR) app. the project explores the relationship between material behaviour, robotic fabrication and visitor experience.

the installation is a lightweight, full-scale pavilion whose bending-active rattan structure is developed through material and structural simulation. robotic manufacturing uses two synchronised KUKA arms, supported by digitally prototyped end effectors, to twist and form the structural elements.

Robotic rattan fabrication and prototypes of the tools used to form pavilion components.

an interactive XR prototype extends the physical pavilion by visualising structural loading, material behaviour and light-based effects. the digital layer connects the built object with simulations of how it performs and how visitors might experience its embedded visual behaviours.

Extended-reality views overlay structural, material and visual simulations on the pavilion.
